Report: Eccleshill United 1-3 Farsley Celtic
Farsley Celtic’s preparations for the 2018/19 campaign continued as they defeated Eccleshill United 3-1.
Will Hayhurst, Adam Clayton and Ben Atkinson were all on target for the Celts as they earned their first victory of pre-season, following a 3-2 defeat to Harrogate Town on Friday night.
After a quiet opening Farsley broke the deadlock midway through the first-half, as Eccleshill ‘keeper Dominic Smith could only parry the ball straight to Will Hayhurst who made no mistake to score his first Farsley goal.
Farsley came agonisingly close to doubling their lead as Danny Ellis did well to knock the ball down to Paul Walker, but his strike hit the post before rolling across the goal and eventually to safety.
The hosts then fashioned their first opportunity as Charlie Flaherty found Chris Lever, however he failed to hit the target with his improvised half-volley.
Just moments into the second-half Luke Parkin had the ball in the back of the net for Farsley, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Nathan Cartman was the next to come close to doubling Farsley’s leader after being played in by Lewis Turner, before being denied by a smart save from Smith.
The Celts were then awarded a penalty as Paul Walker was felled in the box, however Smith made an excellent save to deny Ryan Watson from the spot before smothering the rebound.
Just minutes later Smith had to be at his best once again as a terrific fingertip save denied Danny Ellis after he rose highest to meet Ryan Watson’s cross.
Danny Ellis continued to be at the centre of Farsley’s attacks, as he knocked the ball down to Kurt Harris whose acrobatic volley thudded against the crossbar with Smith beaten.
Eccleshill’s Jonny Irving then had a fantastic chance to draw level after breaking in behind, only to slice his effort wide and fail to test Ed Hall.
Farsley then deservedly doubled their lead courtesy of Adam Clayton, who met Ryan Watson’s corner with a bullet header leaving Dominic Smith with no chance.
The visitors then had a brace of chances in the space of a couple of minutes to extend their lead, Lewis Turner being denied by a good save, before Callum Hill found Paul Walker whose driven effort was pushed to safety.
Eccleshill did pull a goal back with just over five minutes remaining, as Levi Maturine beat the offside trap and latched onto Luke Harrop’s ball before coolly slotting home.
Ben Atkinson then had a chance to seal the victory for Farsley as he was played in by Paul Walker and rounded Smith, before an Eccleshill trialist made a terrific block on the line.
A minute later Walker once again found Ben Atkinson and this time he made no mistake as he poked the ball home to secure a first win of pre-season for Adam Lakeland’s charges.
