Report: Farsley Celtic 1-1 Gainsborough Trinity
By Thomas Ritchie
Farsley Celtic and Gainsborough Trinity played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at Throstle Nest.
Alex Byrne gave the visitors the lead before Lewis Turner struck for the Celts in the second-half, with both sides settling for a share of the spoils despite creating enough opportunities to take all three points.
After a quiet opening 20 minutes, the visitors broke the deadlock midway through the half as Alex Byrne latched onto Ross Hannah’s knockdown and fired home.
Farsley created their first clear-cut opportunity from a Will Hayhurst set piece, with Jack Higgins heading just over.
Just seconds after replacing the injured Ashley Worsfold, Alex Simmons almost doubled Gainsborough’s advantage, firing into the side netting after good work from Ben Gordon.
The Celts started the second-half brightly and almost levelled immediately, Nathan Cartman robbing Neil Austin brilliantly before curling agonisingly wide of the far post.
Gainsborough then almost got their second on the break, as ex-Celt Damien Reeves played in Ross Hannah, however Kyle Trenerry was quick off his line and excellently whipped the ball off Hannah’s toes.
After a sustained period of pressure Farsley deservedly equalised, as Will Hayhurst crossed for Lewis Turner who turned the ball home at the far post.
Lewis Turner almost got his second just minutes later, however Jon Stewart reacted well and made an excellent save to deny the Farsley right back.
Gainsborough had their best chance of the second-half with 20 minutes remaining, as Ross Hannah was shepherded wide by Trenerry and found Liam King who saw his effort superbly headed off the line by Danny Ellis.
Stewart made another fine save to keep Trinity level, as he palmed away Will Hayhurst’s strike from just inside the box.
In the final minute of normal time Adam Clayton missed a gilt-edged chance to snatch all three points as he turned Hayhurst’s superb low cross over the bar from inside the six-yard box.
Substitute Ioan Evans could have won the game for Trinity deep into injury time as he beat the Farsley defence to the ball, however he failed to trouble Trenerry, with both sides forced to settle for a point.
