Richards becomes third Celt Army addition

By Robert Winterbottom

Lakeland delighted to secure deal on defender

We are delighted to announce the signing of defender Jordan Richards from Southport for the upcoming campaign. Jordan becomes the third summer signing for Adam Lakeland as he looks to strengthen his squad for the upcoming campaign in the National League North.

Richards began his career with Hartlepool United in the Football League, making 66 appearances for the side. He has also appeared for Alfreton Town, AFC Fylde and most recently Southport FC, where he was a regular in the starting line-up last season.

Manager Adam Lakeland commented on the signing: “I’m delighted to have Jordan on board and I think he will prove to be an excellent addition to our squad.

“Jordan is an offensive full back with excellent technical qualities, in particular his distribution, delivery from crosses and set plays. He brings valuable experience at this level and above which will be important for us and at 26 he is at a good age, so it ticked all the boxes we were looking for and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“Following the injury to Lewis (Turner) last season, who for me was the best right back in the Northern Premier League, we utilised Ben (Atkinson) at wing back. Ben did an excellent job but we lost his running power from midfield.

“When the opportunity came to sign a player of Jordan’s qualities and experience, we felt we had to move and I’m sure he will enjoy being a part of the group. I feel the squad has excellent balance now as well as competition for places and I’m excited to start working with the players again as we prepare for the season ahead.”

Richards joined the squad for pre-season training on Tuesday night and explained his move to the Celt Army: “I actually got passed the manager’s number while I was on holiday and we had a phone call or two, and I think we both wanted the same outcome for something to be done swiftly ready for pre-season.

“I knew Farsley had a good set up and a good team already, as I actually played here last year for Southport in the FA Cup and it was a really tight game. I have obviously seen the lads won the league last year and I know that there were some very strong teams in that league, so it says a lot to me (for them) to go up as champions.

“I didn’t know much about behind the scenes and what’s going on at the club until I spoke to the manager, but everything looks good and the club is obviously moving in the right direction. The club don’t want to settle for last season’s achievement and there’s a real desire from everyone to go again, and that comes from the manager’.

“I trained last night (Tuesday) and I really enjoyed the first training session. It was tough which pre-season always is, but the standard was still very high when the footballs came out. The togetherness of the group was clear, which I think played a massive part in the team’s success last year and I hope I can fit straight into that and have a strong season.”
